My View

My View

Nowadays, it commonly says information is power. And this information was provided by many medias in the world. If you live in a modern  society, you would experience and expose to media. The media is very helpful to people because it is informative and bring the information to people without difficulty. Through the media, people can communicate opinions with society and learn how society is going. Additionally, the media has a function of socialisation that allows people to understand the spreading customs and institutions of society. However, too early or too many media exposures have a negative effect on certain classes much use of media. Children are affected by media easily and it can occur negative effect to them.

First of all, the media has a powerful addiction of using and children can be addicted to media easily than the adult. The number of devices for social media has increasing and the chance of using and exposing it also has increased to children. Also, the parents are not likely control the using of media to their chilren. For this reason, a lot of young children spend too much time for watching and playing with media. This makes a lack of communication with faimily and results in rejection of childhood activities. Insufficiency of conversation and use of the media induces in a lot of trouble among family and friend.

Secondly, many media includes violence and it can affect children's think. According to the journalist Raphael J (2016), "the new statement, published in the recent issue of the journal Pediatrics, also tackles about the role of unprecedented access of children to portable devices with internet, photo and video capabilities in changing the scope, magnitude and outcomes of virtual violence exposures. These devices can provide access to real violence that captured and consumed virtually." As reported by him, media has the factors of violence and when children are exposed by the media, indirect violence can be experienced and learned to them.

Finally, through the media, children can implement violence in their real life.  dissatisfied with their own lives. According to the journal The Telegraph, "Daniel Bartlam, a schoolboy obsessed with Coronation Street killer John Stape, was locked up for a minimum of 16 years after he was found guilty of battering his mother to death with a hammer in an echo of the television soap." This crime was occured because of the violence in media. Early approach and expose to the media can induce copycat of children.

If children are approached or exposed by media in early time, ther can be occurence of negative effect of the media. Children can addicted to the media and there can be a break in conversation with family and friend and it can lead to a lack of social relation. Also, violence of media can affect children with many ways and as a conclusion children can copycat that violence in the society. For these reasons, early approach to media should be controlled by parents and children need to accept media more carefully for preventing negative effect of the media.

What the experts Say II

Media screens' 'detrimental effect' on children's sleep

According to this article, a study has found that using smart phones and tablets at children's bedtime has a "detrimental effect" when they are sleeping. The article suggests research which has done by Cardiff University, they found 72% of children have at least one portable media device in their sleep environment. And these devices are impact of the quality of children's sleep and it can occur some health problems later.
As reported in the article, doctor Ben Carter from the university's School of Medicine said sleep was important for development. He said their study was the first to consolidate results across existing research and provides "further proof of the detrimental effect" media devices can have on children's sleep. Also, he said "sleep is often an undervalued but important part of children's development,",however, "with a regular lack of sleep causing a variety of health problems". The health problems can be obesity, sedative activity, slow growth, reduced immunity and mental health issues.
For these reasons, the media devices should be refrained from using it before going to the bed. Bringing the devices to the bed can be a factor of attraction of using them before sleeping. So, parents should make rules of using devices in proper time and duration and help to control using media.

Negative Effects of Children Being Exposed to Virtual Violence

According by John Raphael(2016), The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently released a new statement warning about the negative effects of children being exposed to the so-called "virtual violence" and urging parents to cut down the "media diet" of their children.
Virtual Violence is the violence which is simulated violence that appears in media such as  television and movies, also AAP defined it as the virtual consumption of either simulated or fictional violence.
As reported the article, "social media platforms is slowly becoming a place for the youth to produce, view and share problematic content, including images of community violence, school violence, sexual violence and police violence."
Because of the ability of the media exposures, experts are worrying about captured and shared the exposure by youth "without adult supervision or knowledge, independent of structured rating systems, and unrestricted by traditional viewing controls that commonly manage television, movie, and gaming selections."
According to the article, "violence is defined as aggression with an ultimate goal of inflicting extreme physical harm, such as injury and death. AAP is now urging parents to control the media diet of their child to lessen their exposure to virtual violence."

Current Events II

An Echo of the television soap

This current event was done by 14 years old boy who's name is Daniel Bartlam. According to this news, he was found guilty of battering his mother Jacqueline Bartlam to death with a hammer. And he did that to such an extent that the prosecution says the boundaries between real life and fiction became very, very tragically blurred.

Notebooks found in his bedroom contained writings about sexual abuse, rape, and death. Also, files of websites he had accessed on his iMac computer were mainly violent, pornographic and relating to murder. The files included titles 'How to get away with murder', 'Can you get away with murder?' and 'People who got away with murder in shows'.
Additionally, as stated in news, a deleted story created four days before the real crime in which the main character, called Daniel, who "from around 2012 up to his death in 2047 got away with rape, murder, GBH, robbery and during his teenage years' countless vandalisms against his neighbors". The story contained a description of "Daniel" murdering his mother "Jackie" with a hammer, making it look like a break-in and then setting fire to the house and rescuing his brother before getting neighbors to call the police.
The boy spent the time to plan how to kill his mother, and he motivates this plan from the television soap. As similarly with post <Current Event I>, the boy also affected negatively by media and the media made the basis of crime. Daniel Bartlam implemented his plan by making story contained murdering mother with a hammer and this think and story are composed of other media. This teenager's crime shows how it is important to approach and expose to the sane media for children, how it is necessary to educate and control the usage of media for children.

Current Events I

Copycat of sex crime of children

This current event is the copycat of sex crime which is done by children. Disturbingly, one in four child sex offenders is children themselves.

According to the news, it says "three thousand children have sexually attacked other kids in NSW in the past five years, with a 42 percent surge in child-on-child sex crimes since 2012". And a staggering 140 attackers were younger that 11. About this issue, experts argued that online porn is the main reason of the increasing number of child criminals and warn about it. Specifically, the number has increased almost two times in 2015-2016 comparatively with 2011-2012 and the total number of children is 3005 in the past five years.

As reported by the news, police warned "yesterday perverts are using the internet to groom children, who then carry out copycat attacks on friends, siblings and classmates. And the perverts were “grooming’’ children with online porn." The easy exposure and access to the internet through children's smartphones or laptops are making it able to access adult material also, it can be communicated with the potential offenders.

The police said, “if a child has unrestricted and unsupervised access to the internet, it provides an opportunity for an offender to groom them for the purposes of contact offences or to obtain child pornography.”

In this current event, not only the easy access of children to the adult material is dangerous, but also copycat sex crime of the porno is an important issue to focus on us. Many young children mimic or learn adult's appearance and behavior. Following with this, crime can also be imitated by children. For this reason, the limitation and control of using media to children are needed. By the increasing of source and material in the media and the usage of media, children are getting easier to approach with media and learn from the media.

As you can see in this case, by using and exposing media(smartphone, tablet, video or movie) children can learn it and they are imitating the activity in reality. In order to prevent this situation, control of children's media using is needed.

Effect of Media on Children

Effect of Media on Children

Currently, media is a widely dispersing part across the world. Almost all people have experienced and exposed by the media. As the media develops and the media usage increases, many people are exposed to the media. This exposure also applies to children as well as adults, and the number of use of media by young children are increasing.

Children can get information by the media, however as they are exposed to the media, they also get negative effect by them. Although, children's are exposed by the media , parents are not able to control these exposure because at a young age, children become addicted to media easily.
Children are influenced by the media and are socialized by the media. Such socialization can lead to unintentional crimes in severe cases. For this reason, children's media exposure should be controlled somewhat selectively, and parents of children should be aware of this and control their children's media use.

In this blog, I want to talk about the negative effects of media on children. Through this blog, parents can know that their media use can affect serious problem to their children and children require some control also, parents can learn the way how to control the usage of the media of children.
