Media screens' 'detrimental effect' on children's sleep
According to this article, a study has found that using smart phones and tablets at children's bedtime has a "detrimental effect" when they are sleeping. The article suggests research which has done by Cardiff University, they found 72% of children have at least one portable media device in their sleep environment. And these devices are impact of the quality of children's sleep and it can occur some health problems later.
As reported in the article, doctor Ben Carter from the university's School of Medicine said sleep was important for development. He said their study was the first to consolidate results across existing research and provides "further proof of the detrimental effect" media devices can have on children's sleep. Also, he said "sleep is often an undervalued but important part of children's development,",however, "with a regular lack of sleep causing a variety of health problems". The health problems can be obesity, sedative activity, slow growth, reduced immunity and mental health issues.
For these reasons, the media devices should be refrained from using it before going to the bed. Bringing the devices to the bed can be a factor of attraction of using them before sleeping. So, parents should make rules of using devices in proper time and duration and help to control using media.
